Bite splint
Teeth grinding (medical term: bruxism) is actually not a disease, but only a symptom that can be caused by a wide variety of diseases. It is a widespread problem. Mostly, teeth grinding is done unconsciously during sleep, because the brain processes the stress of the previous day during the relaxation phase.
In most cases, the unconscious grinding of teeth only becomes noticeable when the teeth have already suffered visible damage. The high pressure that is built up between the teeth during the teeth grinding process rubs off the tooth surface and damages the enamel. Once the enamel is destroyed, the sensitive tooth is exposed and more susceptible to disease. The worst consequence of teeth grinding is the complete loss of the tooth, if the tooth breaks trough lengthwise due to too much pressure on the tooth.
Teeth grinding splints are bite splints that are designed to protect the teeth from consequential damage in the case of severe tooth grinding. They are usually transparent and are placed on the teeth of the lower jaw during the time of grinding. They thus form a barrier between the upper and lower jaw and prevent continuous abrasion of the enamel on the tooth surface.
If you have decided on a bite splint, we will make an impression of the upper and lower jaw. This is done relatively quickly and without pain. A 3D model of the jaw will be made from this impression in our dental laboratory. The bite splint is now individually adapted to the model to guarantee a perfect fit.
Remedy for snorers
Snoring can lead to considerable health problems. A protrusion splint (snoring splint) can help patients suffering from snoring problems to find a restful sleep.
The first question that arises is why you snore. If breathing stops, a so-called sleep apnoea, then you should consult a sleep physician.
With “normal” snoring, the airways become narrower. This happens when the tongue and soft palate relax during sleep. Breathing in and out causes the tissues to vibrate. The soft tissues of the throat, which are now in motion, cause snoring noises. Due to the restless nights, concentration often suffers during the day. In addition, constant snoring often leads to relationship problems.
A snoring splint is a plastic splint which is manufactured in our dental laboratory. It is custom-made for each patient individually. The splint shifts the lower jaw and the tongue forward during sleep. This keeps the throat area free and thus promotes normal breathing without disturbing snoring noises.
With a snoring splint, you and your partner will regain more nightly peaceful and a relaxed sleep.
