Prosthetics, the dental prosthesis
Missing teeth can be replaced and fixed in various ways. We basically distinguish three different groups:
(1)Fixed restorations are fixed (not removable for patients) to teeth or implants (implantology). The materials used are metal/alloys, ceramics/full ceramic or combinations of both.
In dental prosthetics, smaller, so-called partial restorations are also made. These do not replace whole teeth, but parts of teeth up to a complete crown. These are inlays, partial crowns, veneers and veneer shells and finally crowns. All these “tooth restorations” can be made of metal or ceramic (zirconium) as well as of compounds of both materials.
(2) removable restorations are clasp dentures, which are attached to existing teeth, or full dentures, which are inserted in the edentulous jaw and only rest on the mucous membrane or the underlying jawbone.
When many teeth are missing…
(3) “Combination restorations” offer the highest comfort and the best aesthetics for removable dentures when the majority of teeth in a jaw are missing. In this case, a removable part (denture) is “combined” with parts that are fixed on teeth (fixation elements) on the remaining teeth. This significantly improves the hold and stability against chewing pressure and extraction.
The parts of the prosthesis that remain fixed in the mouth can consist of so-called double crowns (telescopes), crowns with attachments and bars. On the removable part of the denture there are construction elements which, when inserted into the mouth, connect mechanically with the fastening elements present there in such a way that they do not come loose or even fall out, even under heavy chewing pressure or when eating sticky food, as well as under extreme mouth and tongue movements.
These types of dental prostheses vary in size, shape, appearance and also in cost. Let us advise you!
